Wilhelmslinde (William’s Linden) Dillenburg

Detailed description

The Wilhelmslinde is the only tree in Dillenburg that is known to be a visitor attraction, especially in the case of the many Dutch visitors to the Orange town. Legend has it that it is under this linden tree, which once stood outside the main gate to the former castle, that William I. of Orange received a Dutch embassy on 14 April 1568, who successfully asked him to commence military involvement in their provinces’ fight for freedom.

The current tree is an ‘offspring’ of the original one.
