Description

The agronomist Wilhelm Albrecht (1785-1868) investigated the reasons for the unsuccessful farming in the Westerwald. He quickly realized that one of the reasons for the low crop yields in the Westerwald was the wind, which eroded the soil. He had protective hedges planted to protect against the wind. Remnants of these can still be found in the landscape of the High Westerwald today. In honor of Wilhelm Albrecht, a monument was erected in Emmerichenhain in 1879 to commemorate the "savior of the Westerwald".

Nature lovers will get their money's worth on this hike, which also passes the Breitenbach Dam. The dam is a special gem with rare animal and plant species. The area of around 47 hectares was declared a nature reserve in 1988.

Directions

At the cemetery in Homberg, you can fill up your water supply at the drinking fountain right at the start of the hike. The VR 2 signs point further uphill and past wind turbines. At the top, you can let your gaze wander over the Westerwald landscape. The trail continues towards Waigandshain and Emmerichenhain. The Wilhelm Albrecht monument is located here. The trail leads past the Breitenbach dam back to the starting point.

Safety instructions

If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the trail are not suitable for you, then you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on near-natural paths.

In autumn in particular, you should be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide uneven surfaces, roots, stones or holes in the path. You have to reckon with this type of path impairment when you go on a hike.

Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons or download the free "Experience Rhineland-Palatinate" app.

Equipment

Wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing that is suitable for the weather and protects you from the cold and wet or the heat and sun.

Take enough liquid with you. Refreshment stops are not available everywhere.

Please wear hiking boots that are suitable for the route and offer sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.

Tips

The Breitenbachtalsperre is also a club water of the ASV Nistertal-Emmerichenhain and a wonderful paradise for anglers - guest anglers are "very welcome" and can contact the board if they are interested.
