Description

I'm looking forward to the second stage of the Wiedweg because it promises to be very varied. At the beginning of the hike, the late Romanesque, Protestant parish church of St. George in Höchstenbach fascinates me with its wall paintings from the 13th century. For about five hours I mostly follow the course of the Wied, also through the landscape protection area "Im Dorn" on the southern edge of Altenkirchen with its species and varied flora and fauna. In Michelbach, I marvel at the Michelbach mill, which still today, powered by the water power of the Wied, grinds up to 110 tons of wheat a day. With its six grinders, it is one of the largest mills in the region. The Mühlengraben is also still used (today for power generation). My highlight is the Bismarck Tower, which was restored in 2010. It is a monument and landmark of Altenkirchen at the same time and, at a height of 14 metres, offers a great view of the landscape in the northern Westerwald. (Information and opening hours: www.bismarckturm-ak.de) My hiking stage ends again at a Romanesque basilica worth seeing, this time in Almersbach. From here, only 1.5 km separate me from Altenkirchen train station.

Directions

The second stage begins at Born's Imbiss in Höchstenbach. I cross the B413 and walk 1.4 kilometers to the Krambergsmühle. There I turn left and right again. I cross the Wiedstraße, keep right and immediately left again in the direction of Mudenbach.
After two kilometers I come across a gravel path, turn right and after 300 meters I reach the Marzauer Mühle. I cross a road and walk past the mill on the left. After 600 meters I turn right onto the L265, which I follow for 400 meters until just before Mudenbach. I turn left and walk 700 meters further. On both sides of the path I see a pond a little bit away. At Farrenauer Weg I turn right and shortly afterwards left into a natural path that leads slightly uphill. I walk 700 meters into the nature reserve Wiedaue near Borod and follow the road at the edge of the forest for 400 meters before I turn right. At the middle road I keep right and after 100 meters right again.
At the edge of the forest I turn left and after 100 meters I see Ingelbach in front of me. I walk 400 meters slightly uphill and then 500 meters downhill to the Mühlenweg. There I turn left and immediately right again. The road leads me 300 meters through a residential area, at the end of which I continue to walk along the edge of the forest on the right. After 800 meters I turn left and after 200 meters I turn right. After a few meters I walk 500 meters downhill through the forest to the street "Am Mühlenberg". I follow it to the right until Hofstraße. There I turn left, meet the Wied again and follow its course for 1.3 kilometers. Then the path leads me 100 meters along the street "Zum Pfahlberg". At a crossing I go to the right and shortly before the first houses of Michelbach to the left and again to the right. After 600 meters I pass Burgwiesenstraße and continue my way with the Wied on my left until Frankfurter Straße. After 200 meters, a path leads me 1.6 kilometers through the forest before I make a U-turn and hike up the Johannisberg 500 meters, passing the Jägerhaus. I follow a nature trail 100 meters to the right and turn right again.
From there I walk 700 meters slightly downhill, cross the street "Zum Johannistal" and follow the Wiedweg 700 meters out of the forest to the street "Auf'm Eichhahn". After about 500 meters I turn left to the road "Auf der Hardt" and turn right into a path that leads me to the L267. I cross it, turn left and reach the Kirchweg with the Romanesque Basilica.

Safety instructions

Wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and wet or heat and sun. Take enough liquid with you. There are not always places to stop for refreshments. Please put on suitable hiking shoes on the way, which will give you sufficient support even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths. If you think that certain sections of the path are not accessible to you , then you should bypass them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery passages. In autumn in particular, you should also make sure that the leaves lying on the ground can cover bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. You have to reckon with path impairments of this kind when you go on a hike. Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons. Not suitable for prams Not suitable for wheelchair users
