Notice
In the tour planner we inform you under the tab "Current info" about temporary route changes, closures and detours.
The circular hike, signposted "VR5", leads from Rennerod on the "Alten Bahndamm" and part of it on the WesterwaldSteig to the town of Rehe. Here you can take a look at the historic prayer and school house, which is not missing from any Westerwald guide today. The medieval half-timbered house is the adornment of the place, which was first mentioned in documents around 1300. The path continues to the Krombachtalsperre. The northern part of the Krombachtalsperre is designated as a nature reserve and offers an ideal breeding area for many rare marsh and water birds. In addition, countless migratory birds use the Krombachtalsperre as a welcome resting place. The Krombachtalsperre is surrounded by dense deciduous and coniferous forests, where you can experience the silence and untouched nature. Following the signs you come to the Wacholderheide nature reserve and the Wendelinus Chapel, which towers high above the former cattle pasture near Westernohe, and then back to the starting point at the hiking car park.
From the south or north: via the B54 to the Rennerod exit From the east or west: via the B255 to the Rennerod exit
We recommend arriving by car
Strohheck hiking car park in Rennerod
From the Strohheck hiking car park in Rennerod, the path leads along the "old railway embankment" of the former Rennerod - Herborn railway line towards Rehe and further along the nature reserve of the Krombachtalsperre. The path leads through shady forests and over airy meadows to the Wacholderheide nature reserve and to the Wendelinus Chapel, which towers high above the former cattle pasture near Westernohe. Following the signs “VR5” the path leads back to the starting point.
If you feel that certain sections of the path are not accessible to you, then you should avoid them. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery. Particularly in autumn, it is important to pay attention to the fact that the leaves lying on the ground can cover bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. You have to expect this type of path disruption when you go on a hike. Although the path is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always have a suitable hiking map with you or download the free “Experience Rhineland-Palatinate” app.
Wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate, practical clothing that protects against cold and wet or heat and sun. Take enough liquid with you. There are not places to stop for refreshments everywhere. Please wear hiking boots that are appropriate for the route and provide sufficient support even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.
You can take your first break at the drinking water fountain and fill up your bottles with good “Renneroder Klare”.
