Hiking Trail
Route profile
Notice
In the tour planner we inform you under the tab "Current info" about temporary route changes, closures and detours.
The circular hiking trail "Drei-Lände-Höhenweg VR3" leads to the Dreiländer-Eck - the point where the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia meet and to the Ketzerstein with great views. The basalt blocks of the Ketzerstein have a very strange property: Anyone who relies on their compass will get off the right path. At Ketzerstein it is always north, no matter which direction you come from. You then reach the highest point of the hike - the Fuchskaute. This is 657 m above sea level. NN the highest elevation in the Westerwald. The Fuchskaute nature reserve covers 40.2 hectares and was designated as a protected area in 1984. The area has become known for its rich arnica deposits. But there is much more to discover: bristly grass turf indicates former pasture areas. Large parts are overgrown with finials. The typical inhabitants include various orchids, the forest hyacinth, the dog violet and the broom. There is also a large population of heather juniper. The animal world is also well represented around Fuchskaute. In fact, some animal species in Rhineland-Palatinate only occur here!
Hiking parking lot on the K38 between the towns of Liebenscheid-Weißenberg and Rabenscheid
We recommend arriving by car
The hike starts at the hiking car park on the K38 between the towns of Liebenscheid-Weißenberg and Rabenscheid. The 11 km long hiking trail leads on the "VR3" first to the Dreiländer-Eck - the point where the federal states of Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia meet and continues west through the town of Liebenscheid-Weißenberg, past the "Aal Schul" and the "Alte Esche" natural monument. From there it goes up to the Ketzerstein with great views and above the town of Willingen the path leads through the Fuchskaute nature reserve back to the starting point.
If you feel that certain sections of the path are not accessible to you, then you should avoid them. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery. Particularly in autumn, it is important to pay attention to the fact that the leaves lying on the ground can cover bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. You have to expect this type of path disruption when you go on a hike. Although the path is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always have a suitable hiking map with you or download the free “Experience Rhineland-Palatinate” app.
Wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate, practical clothing that protects against cold and wet or heat and sun. Take enough liquid with you. There are not places to stop for refreshments everywhere. Please wear hiking boots that are appropriate for the route and provide sufficient support even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.
Along the approximately 2 km long “Arnica circular trail” information boards provide information about the flora, fauna and history of the Fuchskaute nature reserve.
