Detailed description

Schnapper and Doppler are two sculptures made of Corten steel in the old town of Wissen, created by sculptor Arnold Morkramer in 2011. They represent working professions in the former Wissen hot rolling mill. Find out more about the interesting figures here.

In the nearby town of Siegen, it is the statues of Henner and Frieder (miner and smelter) and their story that fascinate the people of Siegen and their guests. It is a similar story with Schnapper and Doppler, two approx. 3 m high figures made of Corten steel, each weighing around 400 kg. They are reminiscent of the identically named occupations in the former Wissen hot rolling mill, which existed until 1961. Sheet metal was "snapped" during processing and "doubled" with clogs, which is how the two terms came about. Later, modern rolling mills took over this work.

The sculptures were made and welded in Kamp-Bornhofen by artist and sculptor Arnold Morkramer (Bruchertseifen), who was assisted by master blacksmith and locksmith Friedhelm Biernat. A remarkable achievement, considering that Morkramer was celebrating his 80th birthday at the time and Biernat was already 75 years old. Both had the necessary know-how to realise the ambitious art project.

The Förderverein kulturWERKwissen e. V., chaired by Berno Neuhoff, succeeded in collecting sufficient donations for the two sculptures so that they could be installed in the middle of the roundabout in the old town of Wissen ("Wissener Ei") after a construction period of about 6 months. In this way, the town of Wissen and the sponsoring association commemorate the hard-working people in what was once Europe's most modern rolling mill, which was closed in 1995. Many men earned their daily bread as snappers or doublers.

The sculptures are located at the western end of Walzwerkstraße in Wissen, along which there are other works of art and mementos of the former rolling mill and the coal and steel industry in Wisserland.
