Detailed description

The village was first mentioned in 1274 as Schelt. Heydenreich von Dernbach sold property in the village to the Keppel monastery. The Reformation reached Niederscheld in 1530 and the village became Protestant. During the Thirty Years' War, the village of Scheld was attacked and plundered several times by troops who laid siege to Dillenburg Castle. In 1796 a village fire devastated Niederscheld. In 1806, the village belonged to the Grand Duchy of Berg and the Département Sieg, which meant that the village became French in the meantime.
