We start at the Haus des Gastes in Limbach and soon reach the publicly accessible, medieval roof slate pit Assberg. We hike through beautiful deciduous forests down into the valley of the Great Nister, where the Cistercian Marienstatt Abbey with its early Gothic basilica, the romantic cloister garden and the Marienstatter brewery await us. Via the monastery walk we reach the Imperial Cemetery and start the ascent to the "Schöne Aussicht" lookout point. Here the name says it all and we are impressed not only overlook the entire monastery complex, but also see the castle of the medieval town of Hachenburg in the distance. We continue to the picturesque village of Astert and from here we follow the Great Nister until shortly before Heuzert. We climb the Hartenberg with another spectacular vantage point and then start the way back past the Lützelauer Mühle, where the Kleine Nister awaits us and leads us along the wild and romantic Heunig cave path to Limbach.

Safety instructions

  • Wear sturdy shoes and suitable clothing that is suitable for the weather and protects you from the cold and wet or from the heat and sun.
  • Take plenty of fluids with you. There are not many places to stop for refreshments.
  • Please put on suitable hiking shoes on the way, which will give you sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths. I
  • f you are of the opinion that certain sections of the path are not accessible to you then you should bypass this. Especially in adverse weather conditions, near-natural paths can lead to muddy and slippery passages.
  • Particularly in autumn, it is also important to ensure that the leaves lying on the ground can cover bumps, roots, stones or holes in the path. You should expect this kind of obstacle to the path when you go on a hike.
  • Although the path is consistently very well marked, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons.

We should definitely take the time to take a breather in the beautifully landscaped monastery garden!
