The Romanesque basilica in Mehren was one of the first churches in the lower Altenkirchen district. There is documentary evidence that the parish passed from the possession of the Counts of Neuenahr to Count Johann I of Sayn as early as 1298. It is mentioned as an independent parish church as early as 1316. The basilica is a three-nave Protestant parish church (around 1200) with a groin-vaulted, truncated chancel and pilastered apse as well as a still preserved half-timbered construction.
