Brachbach

Besucherbergwerk Schieferstollen "Josefsglück" Brachbach

Detailed description

The "Josefsglück" slate mine was once developed as a small-scale operation in which a handful of miners dug for slate in three search mines from 1896 to 1925.

After long and intensive preparatory work, it has been operated as a visitor mine since June 9, 2011.

You “travel” on foot through the approx. 300 m long tunnel. In the seven mining chambers we will show you, among other things, how slate is mined

was created
won and mined
manufactured and used and
how the tunnel was driven into the mountain.

The “rising sun” installed in mining hall 3 is probably unique in the world. Let yourself be surprised.

The route is flat, mostly dry and can be described as senior-friendly. Children aged 10 and over are allowed to "ride in".

The air in the tunnel is clearer and purer than anywhere else. The temperature is constantly around 8°C and the humidity is around 86%. It is therefore advisable to wear appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. During the approximately one-hour tour, you are required to wear a helmet, which will also be provided to you free of charge along with the “light”.

In a guided tour lasting around 1 to 1.5 hours, you will not only gain insights into the world of our ancestors - the miners. You will meet like-minded people for a cozy and unforgettable experience underground in the visitor mine of the “Josefsglück” slate mine.

Directions: Signposted from the entrance to Brachbach. In the center of town, take Mittelstrasse to the end of Marienstrasse. You can park your vehicle at the hiking car park there and, on foot, walk slightly uphill after approx. 200 m to the pit house with the small exhibition museum of the "Josefsglück". Further information about the visitor mine can also be downloaded at: www.heimatverein-brachbach.de/baudenkmale/visitorbergwerk-josefsglück/

The visitor mine is part of the extensively restored mine hiking trail (GeoRoute) with a total of 13 tunnel portals. Why not combine a tour of the mine with a hike along the mine hiking trail (around 5 km or alternatively just under 10 km) around Brachbach. A separate brochure on the hiking trail with lots of information and pictures about the route and the various tunnels is available from the local community of Brachbach or for downloading at www.heimatverein-brachbach.de/baudenkmale/grubenwanderweg/.

We look forward to welcoming you to an unforgettable underground experience in "Josefglück" in Druids.Hexen.SiegerLand with a warm GLÜCK-AUF.
