Description

The trail leads over the heights of the high Westerwald through forests and across meadows.

Right at the starting point, you enter a historically significant area where things were not always as peaceful as they are today. The Salzburger Kopf is formed by the two elevations Galgenberg (645 m) and Saalberg (653 m). From here, you have a wonderful distant view and, in good weather, you can see not only the Westerwald elevations further south, but even the Feldberg in the Taunus. Even during the Thirty Years' War, court was held here for the lordship of the Westerwald. Death sentences were carried out on the nearby Galgenberg.

From this historic place, the hike takes you past Westerwald villages to Fuchskaute - the highest elevation in the Westerwald - and back to the starting point.

Directions

From the starting point at Salzburger Kopf, the VR1 trail marker leads over the K35 into a meadow path to Galgenberg with a great view. Cross the village of Salzburg over a bridge to the left towards the cemetery, across meadows and through woods to Zehnhausen. There you cross the B54 and the path leads through the forest towards Waigandshain. From there through the wind farm and after crossing the B414 in the direction of Fuchskaute. The trail leads through Willingen and Bretthausen back to the starting point.

Safety instructions

If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the trail are not suitable for you, then you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on near-natural paths.

In autumn in particular, you should be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide uneven surfaces, roots, stones or holes in the path. You have to reckon with this type of path impairment when you go on a hike.

Although the path is very well marked throughout, you should always have a suitable hiking map with you for safety reasons or download the free "Experience Rhineland-Palatinate" app.

Equipment

Wear sturdy shoes and appropriate clothing that is suitable for the weather and protects you from the cold and wet or the heat and sun.

Take enough liquid with you. Refreshment stops are not available everywhere.

Please wear hiking boots that are suitable for the route and offer sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.

Tips

When there is snow in winter, the ski area on the Salzburger Kopf ski slope with lift is an ideal destination for families with children for skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and tobogganing.
