Description

The circular route leads from Selters to the seven ponds of the Westerwald lake district and back. In Selters, I visit the MU*SE museum with its old tools. I can pick them up myself and imagine what life was like for people in the past. In Maxsain, I take a look at the Protestant church in the town center. I continue towards Freilingen. Here I like to take a detour to the Helleberg viewing tower between Weidenhahn and Düringen. I then cycle through nature conservation and animal protection areas to Wölferlingen. Here, too, there is a Protestant church from the 18th century. A little further on is the Wölferlinger Kopf, the highest point of the tour (430 meters). A detour to the seven ponds of the Westerwald lake district and a rest at the forest playground before Steinen provide relaxing moments. Behind Steinen, I am treated to a wonderful view. Finally, I pay a visit to the "Schmanddippe" castle ruins in Hartenfels before heading back towards Selters.

Approach

Freeway exits:

BAB 3, Cologne - Frankfurt: Dierdorf
BAB 3, Frankfurt - Cologne: Ransbach-Baumbach
BAB 45, Dortmund - Frankfurt: Dierdorf

Directions

I start in Selters at the junction of Bahnhofstraße and Rheinstraße. Then it's through the town, over the tracks and into the forest to Maxsain. The route is mainly on field and farmland paths, on which I make good progress despite various inclines. I pass Freilingen and reach Wölferlingen. Here, too, the route climbs steeply. I take an extended left-hand bend over the Wölferlinger Kopf and make my way back. The forest and lake landscape is a delight for all the senses, as is the sweeping view of the Siebengebirge mountains that awaits me behind Steinen. The road gradually descends. I reach Selters again via Hartenfels, Rückeroth and Goddert. I don't miss the opportunity to take a look at the Protestant church in Rückeroth, which dates back to the 13th century. The large lime tree in front of it is also worth seeing. On the way along the main road in Goddert, I take a final look at the fountain.

Safety instructions

Very good physical condition required.

Equipment

The back is not the only place for bags and rucksacks on a bike tour - the weight of the equipment should ideally be distributed over several parts of the body and bike. Wind, rain or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike - a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day tour, you should always have a suitable change of clothes to hand to be prepared for any eventuality. In addition to other important items of equipment, the necessary tools and repair utensils should not be forgotten. At high speeds, it is easy to take a wrong turn on a bike tour: Traditional and modern aids such as a cycle map or GPS device can help you find your way. You should also always have a small emergency kit with you.

Tips

I take swimming equipment with me, as there are seven ponds along the way where I can stop for a swim. I also find a few inns along the way.
