The first thing I come across is the magnificent Krombach dam. Here I take the opportunity to go for a swim. I pass the Knoten (581 meters), the highest point on my tour, and continue on to Mengerskirchen. The tower of the former castle, now a palace, houses a local history museum. The building is also used as a town hall. A short detour takes me to the Adolf Weiss memorial, where I enjoy a rest. The path leads me past the lake pond (also a bathing opportunity) and through an extensive wooded area to Mittelhofen. There are various protected areas, including the fauna-flora habitat Wetlands and heaths of the High Westerwald. There is a Catholic chapel from the late 18th century on Kapellenstraße. To the north of Westernohe, there is a Wendelinus chapel and a protected juniper heath. Finally, in Waldmühlen there is a cast-iron fountain from the 19th century. Throughout the journey, I enjoy the wonderful wide views that are typical of the Westerwald.
Public transport connections: only with buses to Rennerod or Mengerskirchen, no bicycle transport options
Parking facilities in the city center of Rennerod
I estimate around three hours for the 33 kilometers without breaks. There tends to be a lot of downhill at the start, but there are a few climbs at the beginning and towards the end of the tour. The route takes you along pleasant country lanes and hiking trails. I start in Rennerod at the "Strohheck" hiking parking lot and cycle along a former railroad line towards Rehe. I reach the large Krombach dam, which lies on the border between Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse. I will cross this border again on the way back further south. After Driedorf-Mademühlen, I first pass the model airfield and a few farms before reaching the so-called Langmauer, the old Rhine road. This is followed by a long climb to the end of the forest, then I cycle past wind turbines to the Seeweiher pond. Here, the R8 cycle path offers a connection to the Kerkerbachtal cycle and hiking trail and the Lahn cycle path. On the way back, there are some forest paths and later a cycle path alongside the road to the destination of Rennerod.
Good basic fitness required.
The back is not the only place for bags and rucksacks on a bike tour - the weight of the equipment should ideally be distributed over several parts of the body and bike. Wind, rain or sun can lead to very different temperature sensations on the bike - a cold can best be avoided with professional cycling clothing. On a multi-day tour, you should always have a suitable change of clothes to hand to be prepared for any eventuality. In addition to other important items of equipment, the necessary tools and repair utensils should not be forgotten. At high speeds, it is easy to take a wrong turn on a bike tour: Traditional and modern aids such as a cycle map or GPS device can help you find your way. You should also always have a small emergency kit with you.
In Rennerod, I have the choice between various excellent restaurants. I also like to order a dessert at the De Luca ice cream parlor.
