Döttesfeld

Via ferrata at Hölderstein

Brief description

The first via ferrata of this kind in the Westerwald was built on the "Hölderstein" in the Grenzbach valley near the Döttesfeld district of the same name.

Detailed description

The first via ferrata of this kind was built in the Westerwald on the Hölderstein, an offshoot of the Central Rhine slate mountains. Use is at your own risk. An approx. 300 m long route was built, on which one has to overcome a height difference of approx. 80 m via cramps, stirrups, pins, three ladders and a bridge. The trail can be reached from the hiking car park near Breitscheid via the yellow marked access path of the Westerwaldsteig. We hereby expressly point out the necessary equipment.

Important note: At the moment an eagle owl nests directly next to the via ferrata. For this reason it is temporarily closed. At this point, hikers simply follow the main path of the WesterwaldSteig, which runs parallel to the via ferrata. (Status of report: 06.05.16)
