In the front Westerwald, about 3 km east of Neustadt/ Wied, lies the former Crusader monastery of Ehrenstein in the Mehrbach valley shortly before the stream flows into the Wied. The castle ruins of the same name rise above the church and monastery. The church, monastery and castle ruins form an overall complex that was masterfully integrated into the narrow valley situation at the bend of the Mehrbach. Ehrenstein is of outstanding importance for the art and territorial history of the Westerwald and the Rhineland.
