Bathing – Italian style
The Kristall Rheinpark thermal baths are right by the Rhine River in Bad Hönningen. The pools contain bubbling thermal spa water drawn up from 370 metres underground. And it is not just spa patients who feel good here – it is the perfect place for anyone who wants to relax for the day.
The first naturally carbonated well in Bad Hönningen was drilled over a hundred years ago, which is why the town has been allowed to add the word Bad (“spa”) to its name since 1950. Because the water is naturally carbonated and rich in minerals, it has been known for years to help relieve a number of diseases. In particular, people with rheumatism or cardiovascular problems come to the Kristall-Rheinpark thermal baths for the healing properties of the water.
However, this thermal water from deep underground is also good for healthy people. It is said to help with anxiety and to boost circulation. Water temperatures are between 33 and 36°C in the outdoor and indoor pools. Lots of massage jets and wall and floor spouts also contribute to visitors’ wellbeing. The large sauna area is ideal for sweating out any stress and tension.
The sauna world is modelled on Piazza San Marco in Venice – with marble and precious stones. Indoors, guests will find the Carnival sanarium, the Rialto sauna and the Kaffee Venezia sauna. Or you can breathe the sea air in the salt steam bath, where natural healing sea salt water is atomised by fine water jets. Since it is impossible to imagine Venice without gondolas, three more saunas in the outdoor area have been built in this shape. The colourful structures are mounted on floats on the river bank and secured with strong poles. After all, Bad Hönningen and Venice do have one thing in common: the occasional aqua alta or flood! Thanks to their clever mooring system, if the Rhine floods, the gondolas can float up the poles.
The Rhine itself provides a picturesque backdrop for a spa day in Bad Hönningen. The river can be seen from the thermal pools and from the sauna, so you can watch the boats go past as you relax. Who needs the Canal Grande? Infusions are poured over the hot sauna stones several times a day, including the Hildegard von Bingen infusion, a lemon and apple infusion and a coffee special infusion. The wellness section offers classic massages, Ayurvedic massages, beauty treatments and a hammam, or Turkish bath. In the hammam, you lie on hot marble slabs which have a wonderfully relaxing effect on the muscles. This is followed by a soap scrub massage. Afterwards you really do feel like a new person! In addition, the Kristall Rheinpark thermal baths regularly host special events, like sauna and garden parties, Roman, African and Russian sauna nights and full-moon swimming. A special feature of the thermal pools is the direct access to the neighbouring campsite. This means there is something for everyone: for casual visitors, spa patients and people who just want to treat themselves to a day of pampering.
