The well-known band "Paddy goes to Holyhead" will perform in Enspel on Sunday, 21 May 2023, at 1 pm. Guitar, fiddle, harmonica and vocals: These are the ingredients that three musicians bring to Stöffel Park - on the square in front of the Old Forge. Glamorous time now on the Basalt stage They have become famous with Irish folk and folk rock hits. That their name is based on Frankie goes to Hollywood may come as a surprise, because hardly anyone knows that this group stood for Irish folk in the beginning.
The name Paddy goes to Holyhead refers to the "Paddies", emigrants from Ireland, as well as to the Welsh port city of Holyhead, which was a transit point for many Irish emigrants. Paddy goes to Holyhead was founded 32 years ago.
The band experienced eventful (the various band members can be found on Wikipedia) and glorious times. They performed with artists such as BAP, Beach Boys, Herbert Grönemeyer, The Pogues, Pur, Deep Purple, The Hooters, Jethro Tull, The Dubliners and Runrig and were also present on television. They have played their way into the hearts of the audience at thousands of live concerts.
Their songs tell stories of love and sorrow, wanderlust, war and peace. With titles like "Bound around", "Love Song No. 90" and "Johnny went to war" they have had several chart successes. Paddy Schmidt (vocals, guitar, harmonicas), Almut Ritter (violin, concertina) and Uwe "Uhu" Bender (bass guitar, vocals) are currently on tour as an unplugged acoustic trio. The driving force behind their success is above all Schmidt's distinctive smoky whisky voice and his widely recognised virtuoso playing of the Celtic harmonica. Also the use of the pulsating fiddle as a solo instrument, the reference to Celtic ornamentation and the consistent realisation of the songs from current and historical themes play a role. Added to this is the natural charisma of the trio.
