Dornburg Castle with its “eternal ice” is even unique in Hesse. In summer, cold air flows out of the mountain at the foot of the slope. Under a heat-insulating scree slope, there is actually ice up to a depth of two meters, and the earth is frozen to a depth of around eight meters. In winter, warm air penetrates to the surface at higher, always snow-free points.
It was voted Natural Wonder of the Year in 2023.
The Dornburg, a basalt hilltop, is not only significant in terms of cultural history as a former Celtic settlement, but also geophysically.
