The dog-leg cycle route between Wied and Saynbach

Start: Langenhahn station
Finish: Montabaur station
Difficulty: easy
Distance: 34 km

Route description: From Langenhahn station, follow the cycle route to the left of the road as far as the entrance to Bellingen, and take the first road on the left (Schulstraße) (caution: one-way road – please dismount!). 600 m later, ride up to the end of the village, cross the railway and take the tarmacked road on the right into the open countryside. The route passes through a broad, gentle valley with woodland and fields. The last stretch before the track merges with the K61 is no longer tarmacked. Keep left on the K61 (3.8 km) until it crosses the Saynbach circular cycle route (4.6 km), then follow this cycle route with its excellent signs. The route passes through mighty beech trees to the picnic area and playground by the Dreifelder Weiher lake (8.1 km) and then through the village of Steinen to Hartenfels (12.5 km), where the castle keep in the castle ruins is visible for miles around. The next destinations are Rückeroth (16.2 km), where the route turns off towards the south, then Goddert (18.4 km) and Selters (21.2 km), where the market square is an inviting place to stop for a rest. Leave Selters heading uphill towards Vielbach. From here, the route no longer follows the Saynbach circular cycle route. A cycle lane next to the road makes the next section to Vielbach (24.0 km) easier. Leave the cycle lane at Vielbach to join the main hiking trail and carry on climbing straight ahead towards Siershahn (turnoff at 26.7 km). The route runs in a straight line through dense forest and ends at the first houses of Wirges (27.8 km). Carrying on straight ahead through the town, you soon reach the impressive Westerwald Cathedral (28.6 km). From Wirges, follow the cycle route signs to the cycle lane along the L313, changing sides at Ritzmühle (31.0 km), continuing through Eschelbach (32.5 km) and on along cycle lanes near roads to Montabaur station (34.0 km) or to the town centre.
